“There is Security in Having Lots of Money”

Some time ago two billionaires in Dallas went bankrupt. One former Texan lost over one million hundred on land deal and went bankrupt.  Can you imagine that? Think of the stress he must have gone through! If you think that having a lot of money makes all your troubles are over,is just a lie.  But, I’m not saying money isn’t good.  It is like oxygen-if you don’t have it, you miss it really quickly.

Jesus said that what you own does not really “make” you.

Luke 12:15  And He said to them, “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.”

Jesus gives us a warning about WANTING MORE stuff.   Is it possible that if you have lots of things in life, you could begin to think that “life” is about how much stuff you have?  Jesus thinks so. There used to be bumper stickers that said, “Whoever dies with the most toys wins.”   Sometime later I saw another bumper stick saying, “Whoever dies with the most toys still dies!”

The prosperity gospel says it is good to want more and more stuff and I can use God’s principles to get them.  Wrong.

1Tim 6:10  For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

Having money is not the problem.  Loving money is the problem. Loving it guarantees you will have grief.

If you work for the things that money cannot buy and do what the scriptures say, God will give you the things money CAN buy.

The truth is God wants us to prosper.  That is a clearly spelled out principal in the Word of God.  But prosperity, like many things God gives us to enjoy, can become bondage.  Jesus said one of the secrets of life is to not worry about getting rich.

Matthew 6:24 No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth. For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

Trusting God instead of worrying over money is the way He plans you to live free from the slavery of discontent. Serving Him brings freedom and funds.
